Facebook epedemia?
I’m sure most of us know what Facebook is. Well, for those of you who don’t know what it is and have been spared the world of FB I can tell you it’s a social networking website where users can join networks organized by city, workplace, school, and region to connect with other people. People can also add friends and send them messages, update their profil and notify friends about themselves.
Facebook was created by a guy named Mark Zuckerberg who at the time was a student at Harvard. Membership was originally only for Harvard students, but was quickly expanded to other Ivy League Institutions. After that it expanded to other Universitites and colleges, and now it’s available for anyone over the age of 13.
Facebook has been the cause of many controversy over the years and many workplaces have blocked facebook to increase productivity. Facebook is also being suied by Zuckerbergs former classmates as they claim that he stole their idea and other intellectual property. As of research being done in late July of 08, facebbok was the biggest, most widely spread social network with 132.1 million unique users in June.
Just the other day I read an article about 13 employees at Virgin Airlines being fired for have given critique to their employer and some of the passangers on their personal page. The airline called the act totally innappropriate and unprofessional. The airline also said that there are no exhauses for citicizing passengers who, in the end, pay the workers’ salaries.
Although Facebook is highly popular and have more users than any other network site, it’s value can not be measured in money. Microsoft desided to buy 1.6% of the company for $240 million and knowing that, the entire company of facebook is said to be worth about $15 billion. Even more than General Motors.
So is this the beginning of a facebook epedemia or is it just a socai network for people to enjoy?
