Bar-hopping!
Yesterday, my guy told me that we couldn’t hang out today because he is going bar-hopping. Very nicely, I told him that I wasn’t free either to see him at night as I have a housewarming party to go to but that I meant that we could see eachother during the day. He, even more nicely, told me that he did understand what I meant but that the kind of bar-hopping that he’s going to do starts at noon. I literary dropped my chin in surpisement. I’ve never heard of such a thing.
I started reseraching this bar-hopping this and realized that it’s bigger and more spread out than I thought. It’s an organized event with a lot of planning that goes way back in history.
Bar-hopping, or pub- crawling, started back in England in the late 19th century. The term referes to the act of one or more people drinking in multiple pubs in a signle night, normally walking to each and everyone between drinking. Apparently, many European cities organize bar-hopping events as a social gathering for both locals as well as turists. Some of these placec include Madrid, Berlin, Florence, Rome, Budapest, Prague, Nice, and Paris. Why not check it out next time your are headed that way. It’s a great way of meeting people and being introduced to bars and pubs in a new city. If you’re ever in Dublin, join the Dublin Literary Pub Crawl and you will become a fellow member of Samuel Beckett and James Joyce. The largest one, according to Guinness World Record, was however held in London.
Here, in the US, many people join bar-hopping routes on St Patrick’s Day and around Christmas (The Santa Claus Crawl). The one that my guy is being a part of is just a normal bar-hopping day/night between 20 friends and some of the nicest bars/pubs in NYC. Manhattan have some wonderful ones, especially down in LES, East Village, and West Village.
